Sustainability and innovation in the food industry are becoming increasingly important for modern consumers. LegumiNutty, a new fermented spread made from chickpeas and nuts, stands out not only for its nutritional value but also for its environmentally friendly packaging. The packaging, designed and manufactured by our company, Layer Lab, was created using 3D printing technology.
LegumiNutty recently won first prize at the ECOTROPHELIA 2024 competition, a significant achievement for the product and its team. The victory was even more meaningful as it was achieved with our custom 3D printed packaging, which enhanced both the product’s sustainability and its appeal. LegumiNutty will go on to represent Greece at the European competition, taking place in Paris on October 19-20, 2024. https://www.ypaithros.gr/leguminutty-kainotomo-proion-revithiou-me-oro-galaktos-tha-mas-ekprosopisei-sto-parisi/)
The Role of 3D Printing in Design
At Layer Lab, our goal was to create packaging that is attractive, functional, and entirely safe for food use. We used food-grade materials, ensuring that the packaging meets all safety standards for direct food contact. The flexibility of 3D printing allowed us to experiment with different forms and materials, achieving optimal protection and presentation for the product.
Technology and Sustainability
Our 3D printed packaging is biodegradable and environmentally friendly, contributing to waste reduction and promoting a circular economy. This combination of design and ecological practices aligns with the overall philosophy of LegumiNutty, which aims to reduce food waste by utilizing by-products from the dairy industry.

Safe and Sustainable Solutions
The use of food-grade materials was a priority to ensure that the packaging does not alter the quality of the food and is completely safe. Additionally, the biodegradable nature of the packaging enhances the product’s environmental profile, offering a complete and eco-friendly solution.
Looking Toward the Future
Our collaboration with LegumiNutty showcases how 3D printing can offer flexible and innovative solutions in the food industry while promoting sustainability and ecological awareness.
